DIRECTING

Here is the Rundown:

I am gravitated towards intimate ensemble pieces, and sculpt performances with focused actor coaching and composition.  With strength in conception, my plays display a window into simple yet beautiful character driven worlds, supported with materialized ideas and themes.

Past directing credits include the world premiere of There’s No Place… at the Janesville Performing Arts Center, Kiss by Guillermo Calderón at Beloit College, It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio PlayShakespeare’s Twelfth NightFools by Neil Simon, Tales from the Red Rose Inn by Don Nigro, and All Cotton by Shel Silverstein.  I also assistant directed with Richmond Triangle Players on their production of Noel Coward’s Design for Living, was the Associate Director on TheatreVCU’s production of The Rocky Horror Show, and directed a staged reading of William Hoffman’s celebrated play As Is for an HIV/AIDS Awareness staged reading series associated with VCU’s Humanities Research Center.

When not directing, I function as a producer and director consultant for artists at the Los Angeles New Court Theatre, which I founded in 2011.  Past producing credits include: This is Our YouthA Piece of My Heart, and Speech & Debate.  Our company has come quite some ways since our beginnings, and have premiered the work of notable playwrights including Bekah Bruntetter (Little Man, World Premiere), Jess Shoemaker (Jason & Medea, West Coast Premiere), and Celine Song (The Feast, Los Angeles Premiere).

If you’d like to inquire about a future project, it’s best to e-mail me at alexburkart@gmail.com.  Give me the lowdown and I’ll give you mine.
