For our version of Mary Poppins, we explored with the skills of collaboration and found magic. This included conceptualizing the piece to establish the permissions that the chimney sweeps were the chief storytellers of the piece, creating everything from Mary’s flight, to paper birds, to kite flying. The production moved seamlessly without blackouts, exposing run crew members also embodying sweep characters, as they enacted tightly woven and choreographed scene changes. Bert was used as an in-story stage manager, directing each sweep and moment as it sprung to life.
As in Cherry Creek High School tradition, the production was student-designed, as well as featured an all-student stage management team, associate director, and associate choreographer. Ultimately, over eighty students were used in the entire process.
After each performance, actors in costume collected money for Denver-local non-profit The Denver Actor’s Fund, which provides financial support for local Denver actors needing to pay for healthcare costs. The students raised $1,000.00 for the charity.
